We played a game that involved throwing beads. Then we ate some king cake and got down to business. Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the fist day of Lent. Our mission, to find out what Lent is all about. We talked about how the king cake represents The Wise Men and the baby inside the cake represents baby Jesus. We would not have Easter with out Christmas.
Jesus is a real life Cinderfella. He is a King, but was born in a stable. He didn’t have horses and a carriage. He had a donkey. His donkey didn’t turn into a pumpkin, but He did trade it in for a cross. We read Luke 18:9-14 (New International Version)
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
9To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: 10"Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee stood up and prayed about[a] himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'
13"But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'
14"I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
This tax collector is a picture of Lent. This Pharisee is the opposite of Lent. Which one are you? How will you observe Lent this year? Maybe you will give up something for Lent. Lent is a time of self-denial. But Jesus isn’t concerned with you giving up Starbucks and television. He’s more concerned with what’s going on in our hearts. Lent is a time to give up sins in our lives. What is Lent? Lent is that man who stood in the back of the temple, and looked down at the ground, and prayed to God, “Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Lent is a time for us to be like that man, to give up our sinful habits, our sinful attitudes, to stand before God and to ask him to forgive us. These next seven weeks are a time for you to look deep into your heart, to think about your life and how you’ve been living it.

Last night we had a great debate on which superhero is better. By the end of the night we came to the conclusion that Jesus is the best. Unlike the rest He is real. He has healed the sick and lame, turned water to wine, raised the dead, commanded the wind and water, walked on water and conquered death. (Luke 24:1-8)
